The Kalinago people living in Dominica today are found inhabiting many areas in the Island. They are most concentrated at the Carib Territory however, which accommodates about 3000 Kalinagos. It was established in 1903 and is the only Carib reservation in Dominica. It is also the largest Carib reserve in the Caribbean, being an area of 3700 acres of land. There are more Caribs in Dominica than any other Caribbean country, because at their time of persecution, Dominica was the perfect country to seek refuge. This is due to its mountains areas and thick forests which make great hiding places for the indigenous people, and also for runaway slaves.

Many Caribs today are not pure blood Caribs. This means that they are mixed with people of African descendants and other races, due to intermarriages. There are many with dark skin and brown hair today, which is quite different from Caribs of the Past who only had light brown skin and black hair.

They no longer have the same religious beliefs like before, as many are now Christian converts. The term ‘Mabouya’ is no longer used in reference to an evil spirit, but is the local name for the common Lizard.

There are still traditional houses in the Carib Territory, which makes the place a beautiful tourist attraction site. Many of them also live in modern day houses and wear modern day clothes. The tribe clothing is usually worn for special occasions however, and are very different from the clothing of the past. The Caribs continue to make crafted baskets, jewelry and trinkets which also make beautiful souvenirs to tourists. The Hammocks are still being used today, and have become famous in all parts of the world

Some traditional ways of cooking are still being used today; but using a stove is more convenient and so many Caribs use stoves for cooking. Modern day Caribs are very offended by the term ‘Cannibal’ and this is not surprising considering that there were no real sighting of their ancestors ever devouring the flesh of other humans. Even so, it is written that they were cannibals in almost all history books.
